How to use liquid mycelium?

There are several steps between having a liquid mushroom culture and harvesting a crop of edible mushrooms. The first step in growing mushrooms using liquid mycelium is to colonise it on grains. Wheat grains are best suited to this process. The grain must be soaked, cooked and dried before use.

Sterilisation of bags or jars of grain is essential for safe use. After sterilisation, the next step is to inoculate the liquid culture into the bag through the injection port. It is important to wait 3 to 10 days for signs of mycelial growth.

Breaking up and stirring the grain helps to speed up the final phase of colonisation. The whole bag or jar will be colonised between three and seven days after breaking up. Different types of fungi require different substrates, such as sawdust or straw.
